Vitiligo is a common skin condition characterized by pigment loss. While diet cannot cure it, certain foods do impact nutritional status. Here’s a concise guide summarizing the most frequently asked questions, categorized into four recommended food types and four foods to limit for daily reference.
These four categories are commonly seen at the dining table
1、Dairy and soy products rich in tyrosine
Tyrosine is an amino acid precursor required for melanin synthesis. Eggs, milk, tofu, and soybean milk fall into this category, offering high-quality protein at an affordable price, making them reliable options for regular meals. Individuals with sensitive digestion should avoid overeating at once and opt for smaller, more frequent meals for better absorption.
2、Foods rich in copper and zinc
Copper and zinc are involved in the function of various enzymes in the body and are related to pigment metabolism. Animal livers, oysters and shellfish, as well as nuts like walnuts and peanuts, are among the sources. Nuts are high in calories, so a small handful per day is sufficient; livers should be consumed once or twice a week, with about 50 grams each time. Seafood should be fresh and thoroughly cooked.
3、naturally dark-colored foods
Black sesame, black beans, black rice, mulberries, purple cabbage, and black fungus. These foods are dark in color and rich in anthocyanins and trace elements. Grinding black sesame into powder and mixing it into congee, or blending black beans into soybean milk, are easy-to-maintain ways to consume them.
4、Fresh fruits and vegetables and whole grains
Spinach, carrots, blueberries, along with whole grains like millet and oats, can replenish vitamins, dietary fiber, and antioxidants. The more diverse the types of vegetables and fruits, the better. There's no need to focus on eating just one type excessively.
These four types should be consumed sparingly
1、Spicy and stimulating foods
Chili peppers, Sichuan pepper, raw garlic, mustard, and spicy dishes like hot pot and barbecue are more likely to cause skin redness and itching. The skin around white patches is inherently more sensitive than other areas. When cooking, opt for lighter flavors and minimize the use of strong seasonings.
2、Various types of alcohol
Beer, baijiu, and red wine all count. Drinking alcohol can cause blood vessels to dilate and may also affect nutrient absorption and physical condition. For those undergoing health adjustments, it is recommended to abstain entirely.
3. Seafood and the traditional concept of "fāwù" (trigger foods)
Shrimp, crab, shellfish, and lamb, among others. Their protein structures differ significantly from those in the human body, making them prone to cause allergies. Once the skin becomes allergic and scratched, it is detrimental to the vitiligo-affected areas. Individuals with a history of allergies should strictly avoid these foods.
4. Strong tea, strong coffee, and chocolate
These items contain relatively high levels of phenolic substances. Drinking large amounts of strong tea or coffee over a long period is not beneficial to health. If you want to stay alert, opt for light tea or plain boiled water instead.
Note: As part of daily management, it cannot replace formal medical treatment. If new white patches appear or the area expands, please seek consultation at a dermatology department of a regular hospital. Do not rely on so-called "dietary remedies" or purchase supplements on your own. Maintaining a regular sleep schedule, wearing sunscreen when going out, and avoiding skin injuries are equally important.
